Traffic Citation and Abstract of Record Examples
(1). To Accept Guilt: If you want to accept guilt for your traffic violation and pay your fines and fees without having to go to court, the option you should check and sign for while being issued your citation is the first option as depicted on the example citation shown below on the left hand side highlighted in orange and titled: PENALTY ASSESSMENT. Remember, however, that this is an admission of guilt and by signing for the penalty assessment on your citation, it is very likely that you will not be able to change your mind down the road should you ultimately decide to contest your traffic offense allegation in court. As another reminder, the penalty assessment option is only available for select traffic charges. Any other traffic charge will require a court appearance, such as a charge for Driving While Under the Influence of Liquor and/or Drugs or Reckless Driving.
(2). To Contest Your Citation: If you would like to contest your traffic citation or be provided the opportunity for a skilled attorney to advocate on your behalf for a favorable resolution in court, check the second option as depicted on the example citation shown below on the left hand side highlighted in orange and titled: COURT APPEARANCE. If you check and sign for this option on your citation, we suggest that you make sure the citing officer and the MVD have your most accurate mailing address so that you don't miss any important information from the court in the mail with respect to your upcoming court hearing.
(3). Example of Abstract of Record: For an example of what the criminal courts send to the Drivers Services Bureau of the MVD within 10 days of a final action in your traffic or DWI case, please see the document depicted below on the right hand side (or bottom left if you are using a mobile phone).
